Socialization and Liberation: Identity Mask Project
How Society Forms Me By: Breana Jones
Have you ever looked at society in a different perspective other than your own? What about how others see life? The homeless man on the side of the road, or the wealthy man in the mustang driving past you? Whether your life is complete trash or the best thing ever happened, there's always someone who has it worse or someone who has it better. Socialization is how people are influenced and pulled towards the public and now a day trends. We are socialized to label ourselves from a very young age. This labelling generally happens when we make friends whether they are fake or stick around for the rest of our lives. Friends made during childhood and adulthood are made through labels, although labels can be bad and unwanted they can also sort us out and then comes judgement. We judge people for judging people because judging people is bad, but granted, we can’t help but to judge. Society creates labels for everything. The majority of people usually construct their identity out of the labels society has given them and the labels they have given themselves. People often identify with their gender, race, learning style, age, class, hobbies, sexuality, interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Socialization is what defines us as the the individual human beings we are everything we do as a society is a reflections of how we have been socialized and how our background could be, or look like. We as socialized individuals choose our path at a certain day and age at whichever we choose. I was born in Durango Colorado at the old hospital where the public library is now, and lived just outside of bayfield for my entire life, I've lived in the same house for 15 years and grew up in a household of seven people total, my grandparents, two of my uncles, my mother and my little brother. I am also a daughter of young parents who have split, I have never met my father in person nor do I ever want to he left before i was born therefore he's not really a part of my socialization Everyone seeks being unique, to being their own true self. But they also seek the need to fit in, fitting in is a hard topic in today's society, you either have to be hitting a juul or be extremely wealthy, nor am i either types of those people this is why I have so many problems fitting into any type school and get majorly bullied wherever i seem to go school is supposed to be the place we are supposed to feel safe and learn a great deal about life and others and make friends and enjoy learning, school isn't just about getting an education its to observe what's really going on around us and if there is a solution to fix the issues if there is one. I've attended bayfield schools most of my life until one day I was pushed into some oncoming traffic and jumped by a group of girls. That was when my mother and i sat down and talked about making the switch to durango school district. I was 12 turning 13 at the time. I took online school for the entire eighth grade coarse and learned not only that being independent is important but teaching yourself is a challenging yet worthy skill to have for a more advanced education. During online school i didn't get out very much, my mom was always working and my brother was at a public school, the rest of my family had plans going on or a job interview. At the age of 14 I realize that not long from now I will be entering a whole new version of life, experiencing opportunities I never knew existed. I ponder to myself what my place will be in society, I wonder what impact I will be able to have on a world that seems to be in need of so much improvement. Maybe one day I could find a cure for cancer or be the first female president, win the mega jackpot and become a millionaire. I’ll never know how I’ll be able to impact the world until i reach the time and place and find my career path. No ones perfect nor ever will be perfect that’s what makes us unique and one of a kind. People are judged more than others for having less or not enough knowledge about the social groups that have been formed around you the whole situation is what makes the person being judged by a higher social group react in different ways to make themselves fit in to society. Honestly in my opinion it's not right at all. No one should have to change themselves into something they’re not, they should be able to be who they are without being judged by others. That is a major problem that could be fixed by many. We as a society created schools to learn about ourselves and others in this world.but first we need to find who we truly are without being judged by the masses of groups we encounter day by day, and with the ability to find out who we are alone and at our own speed without the worries of other people’s opinions on us. We as a world need to get together and help as much as we can to help better ourselves as a community without using this mask society has given us.No one should be told they can’t do what they do they can’t wear the style of clothes they prefer. Our society should be able to express themselves freely without having to worry about how it will impact them socially. No one should be shunned for doing so. I have been pushed around for being my self, and In this society we should not let that happen. I’ve personally seen this happen to other people also. My name is Breana Jones, and this is my socialization paragraph thank you for listening.
During my second quarter at Animas High School, my humanities class was asked to take part in a project about socialization of the human race.in the process of this project, we were asked to write an essay that explained how we have been socialized as well as a mask that represented our socialization through drawings or pictures. I wasn't able to make it to exhibition unfortunately due to some at home situations. What i'm most proud of on my mask is that its unique and it stands out, there is no other mask like it. I'm also proud about the way it turned out in the end.
